Strange Fruit bears Strange Fruition

Yesterday Lupe Fiasco released his fourth album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt.1. Immediately following the intro is a track titled Strange Fruition. If that title sounds familiar it is because Billie Holiday famously recorded a song by the name of Strange Fruit in 1939.

Strange Fruit was a short song, originally written by Abel Meeropol as a poem of three stanzas, its intro is a little over one minute long before Billie Holiday begins to sing. The song is a clear and eerie depiction of the lynchings of African Americans. Even with such a dark subject matter, Strange Fruit has sold a million copies. The song says:
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Lupe's Strange Fruition samples the piano melody from the original as well (in my opinion) the intentions of the original. Lupe has only two verses on the song, which he uses to depict the current plight of African Americans in this generation. The hook evokes the spirit of the original stating :
Many things, strangest things you ever seen
Oh, look at how they swing, would you look at how they swing?
Embedded they go, no eyelids gone low
Lupe's music has always been full of social commentary so this song comes as no surprise.Honestly he isn't saying anything on this track that he hasn't already said on every other album. What is most powerful and genius about this song is its reference point. He took a song that quintessentially captured one of the most haunting periods in recent history (let's not forget that lynchings, Jim Crow, and segregation were in full effect less than 100 years ago.) and gave it a modern production while remaining true to its purpose. Strange Fruition starts off as a loaded deck based solely on the sample and title. This song not only opens the door for dialogue about social constructs that seem to effect and affect African Americans in the present day, but it serves as a reminder of where we were not too long ago. Strange Fruit was written as a protest to lynchings and what has Lupe done other than protest in his music?

This song has the potential to be a gateway into music history as well. I'm not sure how many young people between the ages of 10 and 20 are listening to Lupe these days. Of those who are listening, how many have heard or heard about Strange Fruit?

Listen to Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit and Lupe Fiasco's Strange Fruition below. I apologize for the quality of Strange Fruition but I couldn't find one that sounded any cleaner. You need to buy the album anyway.

Robin S takes us Back to Bed

Robin S. is our Lost Spotlight feature:

I'm no stranger to the music of Robin S. You might remember me posting one of her very early works on the site a few years ago. Since that time, Robin has been honing her talents and perfecting her craft. I think she's on to something with the direction her new music is going. I've been sitting on this post for just about a month now and I can't keep it hushed any longer.

Back in August Robin S. released a song on YouTube called Back to Bed which will be featured on her EP Key to the Corporate Bathroom. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but already knowing what a lovely voice Robin has I knew it wouldn't kill me to listen. One thing is for sure this song has two things I find most important on a first listen: Good Beat+Good Hook. Back to Bed is a smooth and mellow track. It's got an early morning vibe that can either keep you cozy in the covers with your significant other or get you out of bed to go find your boo cup. The production and her vocals marry quite nicely and the lyrics are just sensual enough to leave you longing for a love of your own and yet conservative enough to play for your parents.

Check out Back to Bed in the video below and feel free to drop Robin a comment on it via YouTube; she loves feedback.

Elle Varner is Perfectly Imperfect

About 2 weeks or so ago, I purchased Elle Varner's debut album Perfectly Imperfect from iTunes. I wanted to support her and thought at the very least I already liked 3 of the tracks ( Refill, I Don't Care, and Only Wanna Give It To You). I admit that at first listen I wasn't captivated. Even so, there was something about it that wouldn't let me give up on the album. So I played it every morning before work. Somewhere between day 3 and 4 I realized that I had fallen in love with this project. I can honestly say that I love this album from beginning to end. My favorite song by far has to be Stop the Clock, and had this album been released a month sooner that song would have put me all the way in my feelings. But I digress. If you haven't purchased Perfectly Imperfect yet, I'd say it's definitely worth the money. If you have bought it, what are your thoughts? Sound off.

Channel Orange

Frank Ocean has had a lot of buzz the past week or so and now his album has been released on iTunes. Channel Orange has flooded my Twitter time line. While I've never been much of a Frank Ocean fan, I do absolutely love "Thinking Bout You" and purchased the single immediately when it was released on iTunes back in April. Honestly, it's going to take a lot to get me to purchase this album. He's very talented but I still haven't decided if he's for me yet. I've only recently started to warm up to J.Cole. How many of you have downloaded Channel Orange? What are your opinions? Speak on it.

The Friend Zone

There are plenty of trends that I'm late on and this MTV show called Friend Zone. Many of you may know the premise: Have your best friend help you get ready for a blind date and at the last minute confess your true feelings to him/her and ask them on the date. I've seen maybe 5 or 6 episodes, with 3 couples per episode. Most of them end happily and the friend accepts the date and has also bee secretly harboring feelings for the other. HOWEVER, a few end poorly. The friend declines the date and the couple rides home in silence.

My question is this: What kind of friend would humiliate you on national TV by declining the date??? If any friend of mine confessed his feelings to me on MTV and asked me on a date, I would accept regardless of how I felt about him romantically. It's just the right thing to do. I would have to clear things up later, but as far as the show goes, I'd pretend to be completely infatuated for the cameras.

Opinions?

Boyce Avenue - A Thousand Miles

We all know "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton, either from radio or the movie White Chicks. Youtube group Boyce Avenue and fellow Tuber Alex Goot teamed up for a cover of this hit. I'm new to Boyce Avenue but I've heard a couple Alex Goot covers before. They did a good job, but there's nothing like hearing Vanessa sing it.

Play the Guitar - B.O.B ft/ Andre 3000

You know that I love B.O.B since I unknowingly went to one of his shows a couple years back. Now he's got a track with Andre 3000, who he's been compared to since jump street. It's called "Play the Guitar" and the chorus samples TI's line from "Fancy": 'Man she play them suckas like B.O.B play the guitar'. It gets two thumbs up from me, if my opinion counts for anything.

Ex Girlfriend - Rasheeda

I've always liked Rasheeda. If you've been following this blog then you might remember the interview I did with her a while back. Here is a new video form her for a song called "Ex Girlfriend". I think it is one of her best videos to date. Check it out for yourself.
